Boundaries, Etiquette & Safety

One of the biggest challenges each year with the Flathead Classic is managing people’s expectations, understanding and complaints about the competition boundaries and fellow angler etiquette. When it comes to boundaries, no matter what organizers seem to do, people always want to push them. Let’s remember we are not fishing for the World Cup here, but we do understand the passion out there amongst competitors. Above all we want people to have a safe, enjoyable and fair tournament experience.
— Classic Committee
  • Common Sense Approach: We encourage a common-sense approach to all aspects of the competition, particularly regarding boundaries, competition etiquette, and safety.

  • Priority on Safety: Safety is our top priority at all times. Please ensure you are safe and sensible while on the water.

  • Bar Crossing Safety: Fishing east of Swan Bay is considered bar-crossing territory. In this area, all passengers in boats under 4.8 meters must wear a life jacket.

  • Adherence to Green Zones: All Green Zones must be strictly adhered to. Fishing in these areas is at the risk of the authorities. It is the responsibility of every boater to be aware of Green Zone boundaries. Read our factsheet about being Green Zone Aware.

  • Tournament Boundary Compliance: Anglers must fish within the designated tournament boundaries. Even if your boat is within the boundary, casting or drifting beyond it while lines are in the water is not permitted.

  • Understanding Boundaries: Boundaries may appear differently from various perspectives and distances. If unsure, it's advisable to approach the boundary directly for clarification.

  • Conflict Resolution: Before lodging a complaint, we recommend initiating a positive conversation with the team in question. It's essential to approach the situation with understanding and maturity. If necessary, take a photograph and report the issue to the Tournament Director for investigation.

  • Purpose of Boundaries: Boundaries are established to ensure compliance with laws, promote safety, and maintain fairness in the competition.

  • Courteous Fishing Practices: While fishing in deeper waters, boats may fish closer together, but courtesy is paramount.

  • Distance Consideration: When fishing in shallower areas, maintain a respectful distance from the nearest boat, approximately a cast length away.

  • Respecting Drifts: Avoid disrupting someone else's drift. If they are already drifting along the bank, approach from behind rather than cutting in front.

  • Right of Way: Boats motoring against the current, whether using electric or main motors, should give way to boats drifting with the current.

  • Avoiding Interruptions: Do not drift or motor between someone's boat and the bank they are fishing.

  • Respect for Others: Please be considerate of other anglers who are not participating in the tournament. Complaints about behaviour and attitude reflect poorly on the entire tournament. Let's ensure the public has a positive impression of our event.

These guidelines aim to promote safety, fairness, and respect among participants and contribute to an enjoyable tournament experience for all involved.
