Be Storm Ready!

Fishing the Gold Coast Flathead Classic can be an incredible experience, but being prepared for bad weather is crucial for safety and success.

Here are some tips to ensure you and your team are ready for adverse conditions and what to do if you find yourself out of service:

Check the Weather Forecast Before Departure:

Always check the weather forecast for the Gold Coast area each morning.

Look for updates on wind speeds, rain, and temperature. Knowing the conditions will help you dress appropriately and plan your day.

Hourly Updates: Use weather apps or marine forecasts to get real-time updates. This will help you adjust your plans if the weather worsens.

SOME GREAT APPS ARE:

Willy Weather, BOM and Windy

Dress for the Conditions Layer Up:

Wear moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat away, and add waterproof and windproof outer layers. A good quality rain jacket and pants are essential.

Footwear: Choose waterproof and non-slip shoes or boots to stay dry and maintain traction on slippery surfaces.

Accessories: Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses to shield your eyes from glare and rain.

Prepare Your Gear Waterproof Bags:

Use waterproof bags or dry boxes to keep your electronic devices, food, and spare clothes dry.

Boat Safety: Ensure your boat is equipped with all necessary safety gear, including life jackets, flares, and a first aid kit. Check that your boat’s bilge pump and other safety features are functioning properly.

Fishing Equipment: Protect your fishing gear from the elements. Use rod covers and waterproof containers for tackle and lures.

Develop a Contingency Plan Communication:

Establish a plan for staying in touch. Inform someone onshore of your plans and estimated return time. If you’re out of service, use a VHF radio or a satellite phone for emergencies.

Safe Spots: Identify safe spots where you can shelter if the weather turns severe. Familiarize yourself with nearby safe harbours or bays.

Morning Routine Pre-Launch Check:

Conduct a thorough check of your boat and equipment before heading out. Ensure all safety gear is on board and functional.

Weather Briefing: Re-check the latest weather updates before departure. Adjust your plans based on the current forecast.

Team Briefing: Hold a quick meeting with your team to discuss the day’s strategy, weather conditions, and safety procedures.

If You’re Out of Service Stay Calm:

If you lose signal, stay calm and make sure your boat is secure. If you’re in a safe location, wait for conditions to improve or until you regain service.

Safety Signals: Use flares, signaling devices, or a whistle to attract attention if you’re in a distress situation.

Alternative Communication: If you have a satellite phone, use it to contact emergency services if needed.

Post-Fishing Check Inspect Gear:

After returning, inspect all your gear and equipment for damage. Clean and dry your equipment to prevent mould and corrosion.

Debrief: Discuss the day’s events with your team, including any issues encountered and how they were handled.

By staying informed and prepared, you’ll increase your chances of having a safe and successful time at the Gold Coast Flathead Classic, even if the weather doesn’t cooperate.
